Automotive Fluids Basics: What is Brake Fluid?

What exactly is the force that works to stop the vehicle? The answer is that the brake system is a hydraulic system, that uses hydraulic brake fluid to compress the pistons on each brake caliper. When you apply your foot to the brake pedal, you are actually moving brake fluid through the system and into the brake calipers in order to compress the brake pistons. The brake pistons apply force to the pad or the shoe, depending on if they are disc brakes or drum brakes, and these apply pressure to the moving disc or drum, allowing a full stop to occur.

At Ferrari of Austin, we want to help you keep your brake system in immaculate condition. Because brake fluid corrodes over time by absorbing moisture from the air, it is important to perform a brake fluid flush from time to time.
